Benton Harbor Area Schools and the Andrews University Department of Music present the first Southwest Michigan Middle School Honor Band Festival. This event to take place on Wednesday, March 12, 2008, will involve selected band students from 12 area middle schools. Students will spend the day on the campus of Andrews University rehearsing music together in preparation for an evening concert under the direction of clinician and conductor, Alan Mitchell, assistant professor of music at Andrews University. Mitchell’s responsibilities at Andrews University include conducting the Wind Symphony, as well as teaching music education courses toward Bachelor and Master of Music Education degrees.
Denisse Brumbelow, Director of Fine Arts for Benton Harbor Area Schools and Middle School Honor Band Festival Coordinator, has been working with Alan Mitchell to make this event happen for area middle school students. This non-competitive event gives students and their band directors an opportunity to work together toward a common goal. Area directors were invited to send up to 10 of their best band students to this festival. The 107 students participating will be performing a free concert on Wednesday, March 12, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at the Howard Performing Arts Center on the campus of Andrews University. For questions about this event, please contact Denisse Brumbelow, Festival Coordinator, at her Benton Harbor Area Schools office at 269-605-1453.
