Winners of the 2021 Fischoff Grand Prize and Gold Medal, the Risus Quartet was officially founded in 2020 in South Korea by four young passionate musicians. "Risus" in Latin means “laugh” and was named in the sense of wanting to give joy and laughter to the audiences.

The Quartet’s members—Haeni Lee, Jieun Yoo (violins), Mary Eunkyung Chang (viola), Bobae Lee (cello)—graduated from Seoul National University with a passion for chamber music. After graduating from Seoul National University, they began their studies in the United States, and they broadened their view as musicians. Continuing their passion for quartet, they successfully had their first invited concert in Seoul, the Tongui-dong Classic on Sept. 12, 2020.

Additionally, Risus Quartet was invited to the Chamber Music Festival from Seocho-gu and Samick Art Center in October 2020 and February 2021. With constant research and curiosity, Risus Quartet is digesting music of various genres from Baroque to modern music.

Jukebox Saturday Night is a music review of the great Big Bands during the 1930's, 40's and 50's.  A fun filled event for all ages that captures the exciting sounds of great melodies and lyrics performed by an energetic group of instrumentalists and vocalists who will keep you moving in your seats, tapping your toes, and clapping your hands.

Pianist Chi Yong Yun is an exceptional artist whose stellar abilities as a performer are recognized internationally and to critical acclaim. Anthony Brown is a creative force in music with unparallel talent as a songwriter, vocal director, producer, worship leader and singer.  Brown, along with his background singers, group therAPy, emerged as a breakthrough artist with their first album in 2012 and they have been going forward ever since with four albums to date. “Uplifting” and “invoking a fresh and joyous spirit” have been words used to describe Brown & group therAPy’s music.

James Lee III, professor of music theory and composition at Morgan State University, is an accomplished pianist and composer widely praised for his work in both areas. He is viewed by notable musicians of our time as one of the most promising young contemporary composers. A son of the Great Lakes State, former student at Andrews University, and a graduate of the University of Michigan, Lee returns to premiere “Violin Concerto No. 2 “Teshuah” performed by Carla Trynchuk, violin, and the Andrews University Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Chris Wild. In all of his writing, Lee aims to “compose music to reach the inner soul of the listener that elevates them regardless of race and religious affiliation."

James Lee's work will be performed by the Andrews University Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Chris Wild with guest soloist, Carla Trynchuk, on the violin.

The Andrews University Symphony Orchestra is excited to present its first full concert of the new school year, one that will be open to more audience members than anything in the previous year. Audience members will be required to wear a mask in attendance, but there will be no limits on seating capacity, so we encourage all community members to join us in person for some gorgeous music making, as there won’t be a live-stream video option for viewing at home.

Orchestral music composed during the 19th Century is commonly described as representing the “Romantic era,” with Romanticism being “characterized by its emphasis on emotion and individualism as well as glorification of all the past and nature.” In some composers’ works of the period, they sought to transcend the physical world with music that in some cases can be interpreted to possess divine qualities. Such Romantic inclinations can be observed in all of the music being performed by the AUSO on October 16, including compositions by Anton Bruckner, Jean Sibelius, and Sir Edward Elgar.

In recent years, the AUSO has welcomed guest composer and Adventist Maestro Herbert Blomstedt for guest lectures and rehearsals, with him sharing his international experiences and wisdom with our orchestra members. Maestro Blomstedt happens to be an enthusiast for the divine qualities of symphonies composed by Anton Bruckner and is often invited to conduct Bruckner’s music with such esteemed orchestras as the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Learning and performing Bruckner’s Symphony No.6 is a rare and unique opportunity for the AUSO, and will probably be the first time that one of his grand symphonies will be heard in the Howard Performing Arts Center.

Prior to performing the Bruckner symphony in its entirety, before intermission the orchestra will perform two shorter works in Sibelius’ Pohjola’s Daugher and Elgar’s Sospiri. Pohjola’s Daughter is a colorful piece that illustrates a story from historical Finnish folklore. A Finnish composer, Sibelius commonly turned to Finnish cultural history as he advocated for Finnish independence from the repressive Russian Empire. A more peaceful work, Elgar’s Sospiri translates to “Sighs” and features the orchestra’s string and harp musicians.

SOUTHWEST MICHIGAN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Join us for an evening of music, exploring and celebrating the strength and resilience of women. Tchaikovsky dedicated his heroic Fourth Symphony to his long-time patron Nadezhda von Meck - a savvy businesswoman who supported many artists of the time. Violist Mitsuru Kubo performs Jeremy Crosmer's viola concerto Masks: A Heroine's Tale. Crosmer wrote the five movement concerto to "draw attention to the different ways women shine in society." The program begins with a suite of excerpts from Bizet's Carmen, one of the most long standing and notable masterpieces portraying fearless courage and rebelliousness from one of music's boldest heroines.

Peruvian cellist Taide Prieto and Mexican pianist and conductor Francisco Fernandez comprise Duo of Hope. Together they have performed in the United States, Latin America and Europe. Currently, they are pursuing graduate degrees in music performance at the University of Michigan. Duo of Hope will perform an all-Tchaikovsky program that will include some of his most beautiful vocal works transcribed for cello and piano by Taide Prieto as part of her doctoral dissertation.

Join soprano, Eun-Jung Auh and pianist, Chi Yong Yun as they showcase art songs by two of the most significant instrumental composers of the classical era; Franz Joseph Haydn and Ludwig van Beethoven. The new capabilities of the powerful English pianoforte inspired the development of the Art Song by these two composers. Haydn’s English songs: the canzonettas, left a strong impression on his protege, Beethoven. Beethoven’s An die fern Geliebte (To the Distant Beloved) has long been considered the first song cycle by a major composer, and subsequently influenced the lieder of F. Schubert, R. Schumann, and many others.

A son of the Great Lakes State, former student at Andrews University, and a graduate of the University of Michigan, Lee returns to premiere “Violin Concerto No. 2 “Teshuah” performed by Carla Trynchuk, violin, and the Andrews University Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Chris Wild. In all of his writing, Lee aims to “compose music to reach the inner soul of the listener that elevates them regardless of race and religious affiliation."

James Lee's work will be performed by the Andrews University Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Chris Wild with guest soloist, Carla Trynchuk, on the violin.

World renowned Pianist and Conductor, Ian Hobson returns to the HPAC Stage for an afternoon of musical inspiration. Mr. Hobson is a much sought-after judge for national and international competitions such as the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, the Arthur Rubinstein Competition, and the Leeds Piano Competition. He will be performing solo works and will also be joined by Andrews University Piano Faculty, Chi Yong Yun as they perform works for four hands.

The Andrews University Symphony Orchestra is excited to present its first full concert of the new school year, one that will be open to more audience members than anything in the previous year. Audience members will be required to wear a mask in attendance, but there will be no limits on seating capacity, so we encourage all community members to join us in person for some gorgeous music making, as there won’t be a live-stream video option for viewing at home.

Orchestral music composed during the 19th Century is commonly described as representing the “Romantic era,” with Romanticism being “characterized by its emphasis on emotion and individualism as well as glorification of all the past and nature.” In some composers’ works of the period, they sought to transcend the physical world with music that in some cases can be interpreted to possess divine qualities. Such Romantic inclinations can be observed in all of the music being performed by the AUSO on October 16, including compositions by Anton Bruckner, Jean Sibelius, and Sir Edward Elgar.

In recent years, the AUSO has welcomed guest composer and Adventist Maestro Herbert Blomstedt for guest lectures and rehearsals, with him sharing his international experiences and wisdom with our orchestra members. Maestro Blomstedt happens to be an enthusiast for the divine qualities of symphonies composed by Anton Bruckner and is often invited to conduct Bruckner’s music with such esteemed orchestras as the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Learning and performing Bruckner’s Symphony No.6 is a rare and unique opportunity for the AUSO, and will probably be the first time that one of his grand symphonies will be heard in the Howard Performing Arts Center.

Prior to performing the Bruckner symphony in its entirety, before intermission the orchestra will perform two shorter works in Sibelius’ Pohjola’s Daugher and Elgar’s Sospiri. Pohjola’s Daughter is a colorful piece that illustrates a story from historical Finnish folklore. A Finnish composer, Sibelius commonly turned to Finnish cultural history as he advocated for Finnish independence from the repressive Russian Empire. A more peaceful work, Elgar’s Sospiri translates to “Sighs” and features the orchestra’s string and harp musicians.

Tchaikovsky dedicated his heroic Fourth Symphony to his long-time patron Nadezhda von Meck - a savvy businesswoman who supported many artists of the time. Violist Mitsuru Kubo performs Jeremy Crosmer's viola concerto Masks: A Heroine's Tale. Crosmer wrote the five movement concerto to "draw attention to the different ways women shine in society." The program begins with a suite of excerpts from Bizet's Carmen, one of the most long standing and notable masterpieces portraying fearless courage and rebelliousness from one of music's boldest heroines.

Peruvian cellist Taide Prieto and Mexican pianist and conductor Francisco Fernandez comprise Duo of Hope. Together they have performed in the United States, Latin America and Europe. Currently, they are pursuing graduate degrees in music performance at the University of Michigan. Duo of Hope will perform an all-Tchaikovsky program that will include some of his most beautiful vocal works transcribed for cello and piano by Taide Prieto as part of her doctoral dissertation.

The new capabilities of the powerful English pianoforte inspired the development of the Art Song by these two composers. Haydn’s English songs: the canzonettas, left a strong impression on his protege, Beethoven. Anthony Brown is a creative force in music with unparallel talent as a songwriter, vocal director, producer, worship leader and singer.  Brown, along with his background singers, group therAPy, emerged as a breakthrough artist with their first album in 2012 and they have been going forward ever since with four albums to date. “Uplifting” and “invoking a fresh and joyous spirit” have been words used to describe Brown & group therAPy’s music.

James Lee III, professor of music theory and composition at Morgan State University, is an accomplished pianist and composer widely praised for his work in both areas. He is viewed by notable musicians of our time as one of the most promising young contemporary composers. A son of the Great Lakes State, former student at Andrews University, and a graduate of the University of Michigan, Lee returns to premiere “Violin Concerto No. 2 “Teshuah” performed by Carla Trynchuk, violin, and the Andrews University Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Chris Wild. In all of his writing, Lee aims to “compose music to reach the inner soul of the listener that elevates them regardless of race and religious affiliation."

James Lee's work will be performed by the Andrews University Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Chris Wild with guest soloist, Carla Trynchuk, on the violin.

World renowned Pianist and Conductor, Ian Hobson returns to the HPAC Stage for an afternoon of musical inspiration. Mr. Hobson is a much sought-after judge for national and international competitions such as the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, the Arthur Rubinstein Competition, and the Leeds Piano Competition. He will be performing solo works and will also be joined by Andrews University Piano Faculty, Chi Yong Yun as they perform works for four hands.

SMSO: Taking Flight

Featuring Grant Harville, Music Director Finalist and Kathryne Salo, flute

The SMSO spreads its wings for this collection of orchestral showstoppers. All of Peter Tchaikovsky's characteristic brilliance is on display in Capriccio Italien, his tribute to his favorite travel destination; and the SMSO's own Kathryne Salo brings Jacques Ibert's effervescent Flute Concerto to life. The second half of the program has a decidedly avian bent: You'll meet the playful Blue and Wild Birds (Oiseaux bleus et sauvages) from Canadian Jocelyn Morlock, and you'll hear why the ballet The Firebird rocketed Igor Stravinsky to international fame.

SMSO: Symphonic Stories

Featuring Timothy Verville, Music Director Finalist and Evgenia Pirshina, contralto

The SMSO presents an afternoon of stories brought to life by great music. Engelbert Humperdinck's Overture to "Hansel and Gretel" opens this symphonic storybook with a familiar fable. Russian - American contralto Evgenia Pirshina joins the SMSO performing a selection of songs by Gustav Mahler. Known for primarily creating massive orchestral works, Mahler asserts his compositional prowess by melding short stories with beautifully crafted music. The final chapter of this literary journey concludes with Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade. Using several tales from the famous 1,001 Arabian Nights, and featuring  SMSO concertmaster Whun Kim, this dazzling display of orchestral fireworks is not to be missed.
