James Lee III, professor of music theory and composition at Morgan State University, is an accomplished pianist and composer widely praised for his work in both areas. He is viewed by notable musicians of our time as one of the most promising young contemporary composers. A son of the Great Lakes State, former student at Andrews University, and a graduate of the University of Michigan, Lee returns to premiere “Violin Concerto No. 2 “Teshuah” performed by Carla Trynchuk, violin, and the Andrews University Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Chris Wild. In all of his writing, Lee aims to “compose music to reach the inner soul of the listener that elevates them regardless of race and religious affiliation."

James Lee's work will be performed by the Andrews University Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Chris Wild with guest soloist, Carla Trynchuk, on the violin.

Come join us for the Wind Symphony Winter Concert, featuring our annual partnership with the Southwestern Michigan College Brass Band under the direction of conductor Mark Hollandsworth. We will explore an outdoors theme, with music from the Grand Canyon ("Sunrise at Angel’s Gate" by Philip Sparke), the Sierra Nevada ("The Grand Sierras" by Gary Kuo), an Illinois barn dance ("Spoon River" by Percy Grainger), a Roman volcano ("Vesuvius" by Frank Ticheli), Rudyard Kipling’s poem, "The White Seal" ("The Seal Lullaby" by Eric Whitacre), and a tribute to the late Stephen Sondheim ("In the Woods").

The Andrews University Symphony Orchestra is pleased to continue its annual Young Artist Concert, showcasing students that have been selected as winners of the AU Department of Music’s Young Artist Competition.

The Young Artist Competition was a culmination for students of practicing their solos for months in advance, then performing them for music faculty after committing the music to memory. Many talented and deserving students auditioned and it was a difficult process to select only five students to perform their solos with the Symphony Orchestra on February 5. In alphabetical order, the 2022 Young Artist Concert will feature student soloists Betania Cañas (flute), Benie Safari Dushime (soprano), Andrew Pak (piano), Grant Steinweg (cellist and composer), and Shania Watts (viola).

For this year, it is notable how varied the winning selections are, encompassing music composed by American, French, German, and Puerto Rican composers between 1845 and the present day. The more recent compositions include Roberto Sierra’s Concerto for Viola (2006), an Aria from Leonard Bernstein’s Porgy and Bess (1935), and the world premiere of student composer Grant Steinweg’s Invitation with Grant also featuring as cello soloist. Three Romantic works from the 19th Century include the Pie Jesu selection from Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, Francois Borne’s Fantaisie brillante on Themes from Carmen, and the first movement from Robert Schumann’s iconic Piano Concerto.

Following our six soloists, all members of the Andrews University Symphony Orchestra will join forces to perform Jules Massenet’s delightful ballet suite taken from his opera Le Cid. The seven short selections from Massenet’s suite amount to a musical tour of Spain, exploring dances and cultural traditions taken from different regions of the country.

World renowned Pianist and Conductor, Ian Hobson returns to the HPAC Stage for an afternoon of musical inspiration. Mr. Hobson is a much sought-after judge for national and international competitions such as the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, the Arthur Rubinstein Competition, and the Leeds Piano Competition. He will be performing solo works and will also be joined by Andrews University Piano Faculty, Chi Yong Yun as they perform works for four hands.

James Lee III, professor of music theory and composition at Morgan State University, is an accomplished pianist and composer widely praised for his work in both areas. He is viewed by notable musicians of our time as one of the most promising young contemporary composers. A son of the Great Lakes State, former student at Andrews University, and a graduate of the University of Michigan, Lee returns to premiere “Violin Concerto No. 2 “Teshuah” performed by Carla Trynchuk, violin, and the Andrews University Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Chris Wild. In all of his writing, Lee aims to “compose music to reach the inner soul of the listener that elevates them regardless of race and religious affiliation."

James Lee's work will be performed by the Andrews University Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Chris Wild with guest soloist, Carla Trynchuk, on the violin.

World renowned Pianist and Conductor, Ian Hobson returns to the HPAC Stage for an afternoon of musical inspiration. Mr. Hobson is a much sought-after judge for national and international competitions such as the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, the Arthur Rubinstein Competition, and the Leeds Piano Competition. He will be performing solo works and will also be joined by Andrews University Piano Faculty, Chi Yong Yun as they perform works for four hands.

SMSO: Taking Flight

Featuring Grant Harville, Music Director Finalist and Kathryne Salo, flute

The SMSO spreads its wings for this collection of orchestral showstoppers. All of Peter Tchaikovsky's characteristic brilliance is on display in Capriccio Italien, his tribute to his favorite travel destination; and the SMSO's own Kathryne Salo brings Jacques Ibert's effervescent Flute Concerto to life. The second half of the program has a decidedly avian bent: You'll meet the playful Blue and Wild Birds (Oiseaux bleus et sauvages) from Canadian Jocelyn Morlock, and you'll hear why the ballet The Firebird rocketed Igor Stravinsky to international fame.

The Andrews University Singers is the select choir of the Department of Music and represents Andrews University locally, nationally and abroad through concert tours, television broadcast and audio recordings. They have given highly acclaimed international concert tours throughout the countries of Great Britain, Iceland, Norway, Brazil, Zimbabwe, Chile, Bahamas, Bermuda and Puerto Rico.

The Andrews University Wind Symphony maintains a significant travel schedule throughout the Great Lakes area and seeks to provide high quality music programs and concerts representative of Adventist education and Andrews University. SMSO: Symphonic Stories

Featuring Timothy Verville, Music Director Finalist and Evgenia Pirshina, contralto

The SMSO presents an afternoon of stories brought to life by great music. Engelbert Humperdinck's Overture to "Hansel and Gretel" opens this symphonic storybook with a familiar fable. Russian - American contralto Evgenia Pirshina joins the SMSO performing a selection of songs by Gustav Mahler. Known for primarily creating massive orchestral works, Mahler asserts his compositional prowess by melding short stories with beautifully crafted music. The final chapter of this literary journey concludes with Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade. Using several tales from the famous 1,001 Arabian Nights, and featuring  SMSO concertmaster Whun Kim, this dazzling display of orchestral fireworks is not to be missed.
